Robert James Byron, 13th Baron Byron of Rochdale was born on 5 April 1950.
He is the son of Lt.-Col. Richard Geoffrey Gordon Byron, 12th Baron Byron of Rochdale and Dorigen Margaret Esdaile.

He married Robyn Margaret McLean, daughter of John McLean, in 1979.
He was educated at Wellington College, Berkshire, England He graduated from Trinity College, Cambridge University, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, England , with a Master of Arts
