Mr Dingley's Saw Mill

Principal clerk at Mr Dingley's sawmill, when he witnessed a mob of some 500 people invading the premises and destroying the mill, putting it out of action for six months. A copy of the government report on the riot at the sawmill is in the Library. The mill was the first commercially successful mechanised sawmill in England, capable of harnessing 36 saws simultaneously. It revolutionised the timber industry since until then all timber had been imported pre-cut in places like Holland.
Charles Dingley imported some £35,000 of timber annually, mostly from Russia, about half the timber cut into deal boards for shipbuilding. He helped build the Limehouse Cut canal to expedite the supply of timber to the Yard.
When Charles Dingley died aged 58 the estate was inherited by his son-in-law John Smith Meggott and by 1778 Christopher Richardson was a Partner together with Meggott and a Mr M'Garth.
