Lt Col Charles Richardson was born on 29 May 1878, his father, Alexander Richardson, was 31 and his mother, Sarah, was 34. He married Gladys Beryl Coddington in January 1910 in Farnham, Surrey. He then married Grace Kingsford and they had two children together. He died on 30 December 1957 in London, England, at the age of 79.

He was educated at Clifton College, near Bristol (UK) and at Emmanuel College, Cambridge. He joined the army, holding a commission first in the Manchester Regiment, and later in the Worcestershire Regiment. He was on active service in South Africa and then in France during the First World War. He was wounded in the leg at Neuve Chapelle and was then employed as a staff officer at Horse Guards, Whitehall, London. He resigned his commission in 1920,retiring with the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel. He lived with his wife Gladys in Mevagissey, Cornwall, until their divorce in 1919.
