Daughter of Malcolm De Saumarez Edye and Isabel Emily Hanmer Leycester. .

Born in 1875, the thirty-eighth year of the reign of Queen Victoria, and died aged eighty-one in the third year of the reign of Queen Elizabeth II

The Victoria Cross

Ethel lost her husband Francis in the Battle of Jutland on 31/05/1916. His bravery in the face of certain death is believed to have saved 1000 lives, he was mentioned by name in Admiral Jellicoe's post-battle dispatch and posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross. Ethel was presented with the award at Buckingham Palace by King George V on 15 September 1916.

Six months after her husband died in combat her mother, Isabel Emily Hanmer Edye, died in her home in Devonport, leaving her to bring up her 10-year old son on her own.
