Diary of a Leycester

Edmund Mortimer Leycester


Son of George Hanmer Leycester and Charlotte Jemima Mortimer. .

Born in 1809, the forty-ninth year of the reign of King George III, and died aged seventy-eight in the fifty-first year of the reign of Queen Victoria  He has 7 direct descendants in the family.

The Survey of Santorini


Around 1848 Lieutenant E M Leycester RN spent a considerable period mapping the islands and published a 38-page report in the 1850 Journal of the Royal Geographical Society of London. The report suggests that he could read and talk Greek.

Liverpool

Having left the Royal Navy and in need of income, in 1860 Edmund accepted the offer of an appointment to the Superintendence of the Transport and Mail Agency department at Liverpool.

He was first living at 116 Duke Street (opposite)


White Place


Upon the death of his elder brother Henry in 1862, Edmund inherited White Place and lived there until his death in 1888.

In 1885 he bequeathed the property to his second wife Anne, as his only son Rafe had died two years previously, with the Leycester heirlooms bequeathed to his nephew de Walden and the portrait of William Richardson bequeathed to his daughter Isabel.
