Emma Constantia Richardson


Daughter of William Richardson and Rebecca Fish Holden. .

Born in Calcutta, India in 1815, the fifty-fifth year of the reign of King George III, and died aged sixty-six in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire in the forty-fourth year of the reign of Queen Victoria

Emma Constantia Richardson never married, by the time of the 1841 census she was aged 26 and resident in St Oswalds, Cheltenham and her 6-year old niece Catherine Muntz was staying with her.
St Oswalds (opposite) is a beautiful example of Strawberry Hill Gothic built 1830-1834, so it is possible it was built for her.
In 1851 (10 years later) she was staying at Lee Hall, home of her younger sister Marianne who had married the industrialist Frederick Muntz, son of the founder of the Muntz empire. 16-year-old Catherine was also there.

Three Sisters

In 1871 the three sisters - Emma, Catherine and Frances - were living together in Cheltenham, and this time their nephew Frederick Ernest Muntz was visiting them.
In 1881 she was living in Lansdown Road Cheltenham (possibly the same building) together with either her niece Catherine (now 46) or another niece called Catherine Muntz (26) and her elder sister Catherine.

Their memorial stone is in plot G88 of St Peter’s Leckhampton, a healthy walk up the hill behind their home in Cheltenham.
