William Hewan Archdale and his twin sister Ruth Irene were born on 23 October 1920, their father, Evan, was 43, and their mother, Esther, was 41. He had three sons and one daughter with Isabel Clare Kissel. He died on 1 May 1990 in Christchurch, Canterbury, at the age of 69, and was buried there.
